In February 2012, the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) launched an initiative to develop a cultural plan for Chicago. Released in October of the same year, the plan created a framework to guide the city’s future cultural and economic growth. DCASE turned to Birk.Creative to create an eBook and PDF version of the plan through Birk.Creative’s publishing arm, Birkdigital.

The Approach

With over twenty years of creative and typesetting experience, Birkdigital creates eBooks, ePubs, and PDFs for corporate and nonprofit communications and supports them through expert branding and marketing strategy. A registered Apple bookstore publisher, Birkdigital brought the Cultural Plan to life with thoughtful design, easy to navigate content, compelling artwork, and a great cover.

The Results

The Chicago Cultural Plan is available for free through the Apple Store and through DCASE’s website, making it broadly available to citizens and cultural partners. One year after the Plan was launched, the Metropolitan Planning Council awarded DCASE with a Daniel Burnham Award for excellence in planning. The Chicago Cultural Plan will continue to elevate the City as a global destination for creativity, innovation and excellence in the arts.
