Most Advice is Garbage

Most Advice is Garbage

Most advice you’ll find online and from expert gurus is just so awful and so uninformed, especially when it comes to networking. So here's some advice you should not pass up on when it comes to social media strategies to enhance networking, advancement of your career, and entrepreneurship:

  • They say, "Pick your social media channel and do the best you can with one or two." This is the worst advice. We're in an environment now where you can scale your content. That means you need to be putting your content, as an entrepreneur, as a small business owner, as a person seeking a new career, on every single platform possible. There are so many tools with which you can do this, and you don't have to do it yourself and have different content for every single channel.

  • Do not take one post and reshare that same content on every single platform. Do not do that. You can do this on one or two platforms, but you cannot do it on every single platform. What works on LinkedIn is not going to work on Instagram, and it'll definitely not work on TikTok. But what works on LinkedIn might actually work on X.

  • Get an account with HubSpot or Sprout Social. These platforms allow you to write content in batches, meaning if you have five posts you want to release in the next five days or the next 10 days, you can use HubSpot or Sprout Social to write the posts, put them in, and they will schedule them out for you. There's no reason that you can't be on every single platform all the time.

  • As much as I love TikTok, please, please, please do not rely on TikTok. I don't know who's telling everybody that TikTok will get you to millions of fans and followers. It doesn't monetize. It doesn't work for everyone. You should be looking at a platform that's emerging called YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts is emerging, and when you put content on there, it scales and goes everywhere because YouTube is putting a bunch of money behind YouTube Shorts to make sure that it delivers the results that it's promising. I'm not saying you shouldn't use TikTok, but you definitely need to be focused on a platform like YouTube Shorts.

  • People are saying that Instagram is dead, or Instagram is not really delivering anymore. This is completely untrue. They are changing the algorithm, and they will change it all the time because it's their right to do so. However, Instagram is integrated with Threads, and you can go back and forth. You can toggle back and forth between Instagram and Threads and experiment and try new things, and that's exactly what you should be doing. Do not, not use Instagram, but definitely use it more wisely.

  • Instagram. So, Instagram was for a while trending really well with video. We are back to their original image-based social media platform again, so take still pictures, but here's the deal. Taking a picture and just putting one sentence is not enough. Instagram has gotten really great with long-form content, not the same as LinkedIn long-form, but it's definitely gotten great with long-form. So you should be putting up an image and telling a story around the image. For example, you're at an airport, you're having a cup of tea, write a story about why you're at the airport and why you're having your cup of tea. What's going on around you? What brought you to that point? What are you going to do when you get to your destination? Why do you like traveling? A picture of you and a tea can be so much more of a story than just a picture of you and the tea.
